Many present building construction projects incorporate metal studs when wall partitions or even exterior panels are being fabricated. These studs are of a regulated cross-sectional size and configuration, and are disposed to extend between track elements that are themselves of channel cross-section. The studs and the track elements are then fixed by fasteners to both floors and ceilings of the building structures, where they join each other.

To ensure that the studs and the track elements are properly interfitting, the length of the studs or tracks is preferably regulated on a per piece basis. For this purpose, the machine is equipped with a switch 82 that can be operated at any desired position along the production line, so that the webs of the stud and track sections are formed of different widths in successive roll passes.

Generally, the width of the track section is much narrower than that of the stud section. This enables the track and stud channels to be nested in each other for fabrication of the wall panel with the studs being joined to the track. This allows the studs to support the loads which are transmitted through the studs, and the track to provide the necessary structural integrity of the wall section. The studs and track may also be provided with cued openings for the passage of utilities. Power actuated flying punch and cut-off components are also provided with the machine.
